New NDNU Program Helps Students Gain Financial Footing

Notre Dame de Namur University joins American Student Assistance to provide financial education to students.

(NDNU) has teamed up with SALT, a program of American Student Assistance (ASA), to help students gain financial savvy.

SALT aims to give students the tools they need to get their footing financially after they leave college. As more students take out student and personal loans to fund their college education, financial know-how is more important to help them manage their loan payments after graduation and be successful in all of their financial decisions.

“SALT empowers students to take charge of their student loan management,” said Hernan Bucheli, vice president for enrollment management at NDNU.

“As more people are challenged with credit and loan management, we felt it was important to provide our students with the building blocks they need to be financially literate.”

NDNU is one of the first higher education institutions in California to offer SALT. All NDNU students who choose to participate will receive proactive communication about student loan repayment options; one-on-one repayment counseling; a personalized dashboard to track their loans; financial education; online budgeting tools and calculators; and job/internship search assistance. Previous ASA programs have demonstrated that students provided with proactive, customized and targeted communication are 50 percent less likely to fail in loan repayment.

“SALT is convenient because it puts all of my loans in one place that I can access to see when payments begin, what my interest rate is, and my options for repayment,” said recent NDNU graduate Ashley Novosad.
