Belmont Woman Rescued in Elevator Collapse

The woman was thrown from her wheelchair as the elevator dropped a floor in a free fall.

An elevator at the Leslie Terrace Senior Living Facility in Belmont collapsed Tuesday afternoon with a woman inside.

Belmont police and fire responded to the report of the collapse at 2400 Carlmont Dr. and found the 67-year-old resident inside the central elevator on the second floor.

The victim, who uses a motorized power chair for mobility, told emergency personnel that she had entered the elevator on the third floor and as it started to descend, the elevator began to free fall.  The elevator’s decent was apparently stopped, just prior to the second floor, by the elevator’s automatic emergency brake system.  When the elevator stopped, the victim was thrown from her chair, onto the floor.
