Belmont Murder Suspect Found Not Competent to Stand Trial

Tyler Hutchinson will be placed in a hospital on April 20.

The 23-year-old man accused of fatally beating a Belmont resident in June 2009 has been found incompetent to stand trial.

San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Mark Forcum determined Tyler Hutchinson is not fit for trial on Monday after two doctors both reached the same conclusion, according to the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office.

Hutchinson is accused of robbing, burglarizing and beating 88-year-old Albert Korn after breaking into his home on Hallmark Drive on June 2, 2009.

Investigators believe that Hutchinson also stole his victim's Jaguar when he fled the scene of the beating.

When Korn died from his injuries on June 17, the defendant was subsequently charged with murder with two special enhancements — murder during a robbery and murder during a burglary — making Hutchinson eligible for the death penalty, according to the district attorney's office.

When Hutchinson was identified as a suspect in Korn's murder, he was already in custody in Yolo County serving time for an unrelated residential burglary conviction committed in West Sacramento two days after he allegedly assaulted Korn, according to the district attorney's office.

While in custody in San Mateo County, Hutchinson reportedly , prosecutors said.

Dianna Thomas, a family member who knew Hutchinson when he was a child, said in a phone interview in December that Hutchinson's father was an abusive man and that his mother wasn't around when he was growing up.

"That child has not had a chance," Thomas said.

The case was continued to April 20 when Hutchinson will be placed in a hospital. He remains in custody without bail.
